Effective Reading Techniques for Young
Readers
 |
Allow your child to select some of the
books you read together. |
 |
Talk about the different parts of the
book, such as front cover, back cover, title, author, beginning, and end. |
 |
Read slowly (but don't drag it out). |
 |
Consider allowing your child to hold the
book and turn the pages. Show your child how to turn one page at a time. |
 |
Vary your voice by using lots of
intonation and stress. |
 |
Talk about the story; relate it to your
child's experiences. |
 |
Repeat what your child says; add words to
make a full sentences (e.g. CHILD: "Ttruck." ADULT:
"Yes, that's a big truck!") |
 |
Monitor your child's face and behaviors
for signs of boredom or fatigue, and end the session when the child loses
interest. |
 |
Compliment your child on her or her
attempts to read. Tell your child that he or she is a reader! |
Remember, make reading together FUN and STRESS-FREE!
