BOOKS AND IDEAS FOR WORKING WITH OLDER AND RELUCTANT READERS Please be sure to share your ideas and we will post them here (along with your name!)
BOOK: (Series) Hank the Cowdog Chapter books that are full of hilarious characters. Written from the perspective of Hank who fancies himself "Head of Ranch Security" on a spread in Texas. Don't miss out on the audiotapes/CD read by the author and his wife that provide opportunities for building reading fluency and hearing the character voices. Chapters are short, print is larger sized, and vocabulary and humor abounds. Great for middle schoolers - especially those hard to engage boys!
BOOK: A Porcupine Named Fluffy (by Helen Lester) 1) Brainstorm other ideas for names for animals that would be inappropriate or opposite. Example: a bear named tiny or baldy 2) This book builds vocabulary in terms of adjectives, verbs, and parts of speech. 3) Name other things that are fluffy. Targets: critical thinking, vocabulary, categorization 4) Ask "Do you like your name?" "What would you like to be called?" Write a story about your new name.
BOOK: Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing (by Judi Barrett) 1) Have students guess or tell why they think each animal shouldn't wear clothing before turning the page. Encourages: predicting, critical thinking, vocabulary, correct use of "because" 2) Ask "Can you think of any animals that could wear clothes that wouldn't be silly?" Targets: critical thinking, vocabulary, encourages verbalizations 3) This book facilitate fluency by establishing a pattern/rhythm.
BOOK: The Polar Bear Waltz 1) This book is a series of amazing pictures that have been published in Outdoor Magazine. They are presented without captions of explanations. 2) Have older students create background stories or appropriate captions for the pictures to build oral, written, and critical thinking skills.
BOOK: Olive, the Other Reindeer by Vivian Walsh/J. Otto Seibold A hilarious story about Olive the dog who, after hearing the song believes she is "olive the other reindeer" and heads to the North Pole to save Christmas.
BOOK: The Pig in the Spigot by Richard Wilbur/ J. Otto Seibold
A PIG in a spigot? Funny poems and words searches like those above help older readers learn about metalinguistic skills. Great for visual learners.
