IDEAS for YOUNGER CHILDREN

Many of these will also work with early primary ages.  Please be sure to share your ideas and we will post them here (along with your name!)

BOOK:  We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Reader's Theatre:  Act out hand motions and sounds (encourages verbalizations and participation)

Paired Reading:  Multiple instances of repetitive phrases to encourage interactive participation in the reading and facilitate phonological awareness.

Predicting:  What might happen next?  What might be in the grass (or up the tree, or in the river?)

BOOK:  Jump Frog, Jump!

Targets:  vocabulary, prepositions, predicting, problem solving, critical thinking skills.

Idea:  Using reader's theatre, assign each animal in the story to a different child to act out.  Talk about the vocabulary that goes with the actions.  Talk about the sequence of the actions.  Talk about what the prepositions mean in the story.

Have students think of another situation the frog might jump out of.

Create a new story in which another animals performs an action (such as swim fish swim!).
